Student survey 3 - changed indoor environment
1. What do you think of our new classroom environment?
All students commented that they liked the additions of the more natural elements that we included in the classroom.
2. What do you notice that is different? What things do you like the most?
Students all really loved the addition of the small water fountain I plugged in. The students sitting closest to that area of the class loved the sound of it running and said it seemed more calming and peaceful to have that element included. Students also appreciated the added plants to the classroom and commented on how it was nice to see things continuing to live and grow inside when it was so cold outside and they couldn't appreciate plants outdoors in the same way. We also had created some natural "habitats" for some little critters during a project on community. Students commented on how they loved to see that our critters chose to live in the natural looking habitats and how it was really beautiful to have as decoration in the class.
3. Do you feel more connected to nature by having these elements around in the classroom?
All students replied that they felt a strong connection to nature when they were exposed to it. Most students replied that they felt they belonged as a part of nature, with only two students commenting that they think they are different from nature.
4. Why might having more nature inside be a good thing?
Students mentioned that they thought it was beneficial to see nature both inside and outside so that we can appreciate the beauty of the world all around us. Students also mentioned that they thought it was important that the nature we bring inside should be done in a sustainable and responsible way. Students knew not to take things from nature that were still growing, unless we were going to provide an opportunity for them to continue to grow like the plants.
5. Are there any bad things about having nature around?
Students could not see any negative things about having more nature brought inside. One student worried that some plants and flowers may attract bugs, which she was concerned about for health reasons but didn't think it was a reason to not bring natural elements indoors.
